“We need to get to Chicago as soon as possible,” DS Swales said.

He and Lisa had returned to Jack’s apartment in Greenwich Village.

“Surely we can find a way to get there before her and intercept her when she gets off the train.”

“Hold on a second,” Jack said. “You’re forgetting one thing. That train has stops in DC, Charlottesville, Charleston, Indianapolis and Cincinnati before it stops in Chicago.”

“So, she could get off in any of those places,” Lisa sighed.

“So, what do you suggest we do?” Swales asked.

Jack looked at the screen of his laptop. “It’ll reach the capital in just over two hours. It’s late, but I’ve got a few friends there who owe me a favour. I can ask someone to get to the station and see if she gets off there.”

“What about the other places?” Swales said. “I’ve never even heard of some of them.”

“Once the train heads north-east up to Michigan, all I can do is put the word out,” Jack offered. “It’ll be the middle of the night then.”

“I don’t think she’s going to go all the way to Chicago,” Lisa said.

“What makes you say that?” Swales questioned.

“I don’t know, I just think she’ll get off at the first stop. It’s just a feeling I get.”

“We’ll make a detective out of you yet,” Swales smiled.

“Have you spoken to your wife recently?” Lisa changed the subject.

“No,” Swales replied. “I told her I’d contact her. She has no way of getting in touch with me here. What time is it there right now?”

“Around four in the morning.”

“Then I doubt she’ll appreciate being woken up. I’ll give her a call in the morning. And I need to get hold of my Chief Super to find out how the re-opened investigation into the Sheila Barnes murder is progressing. I’ve put two of my most experienced detectives on it and if I know them, they’ll have something to report by now.”

“Let’s hope so for David’s sake,” Lisa mused.

“My team is doing everything they can to make sure your brother is released from prison as soon as possible.”

“I really hope so – David isn’t cut out for prison life. It’s really taken its toll on him.”

“I’m pretty certain your brother will see the outside of those prison walls very soon.”

Swales didn’t know how true his words were. He also didn’t know that David Price was going to see the outside of the prison walls inside a wooden box.

Swales yawned. It was contagious. Lisa followed suit.

“It’s been an exhausting day,” Swales said. “I think I’m going to try and sleep a bit.”

“There’s a spare room down the hall,” Jack shouted from the kitchen. “Second door on the right. Lisa, you can take my room.”

“Where is he going to sleep?” Swales asked her.

Lisa laughed. “Jack rarely sleeps. He survives on coffee.”

Right on cue, Jack walked through with a large mug of coffee in his hand.

“I’m going to carry on with the blog, and I’ll get hold of some colleagues in DC and give them the head’s up.
